RICO MAYOR AND TRUSTEES
Four Trustees seats and Mayor were on the ballot for the November 5 Rico election. The one mayor candidate was an incumbent Trustee and the term for this seat did not expire. This caused a fifth Trustee vacancy, so five Trustees were elected. One Trustee seat on the ballot was due to a vacancy caused the resignation of a Trustee and was filled when the Board of Trustees appointed a Rico citizen. Another Trustee seat vacancy was not filled by appointment when no letters of interest were submitted.
Rico Home Rule Charter includes provisions for situations such as the November 2024 election.
TOWN OF RICO
HOME RULE CHARTER
Section 2.3 TERMS OF OFFICE
The terms of office for the Trustees shall be three (3) years. There shall be no limitations on the number of terms which may be served. Two (2) representative Trustees shall be elected at each regular municipal election and the Mayor shall be elected every third year.
At any election for Mayor, a Trustee whose term of office does not expire may run for Mayor without resigning his or her seat. Whenever multiple Trustee seats of differing term duration are available then the seat with the longest term shall be filled by the candidate with the highest number of votes and so forth in descending order.
